Helping a Mother Achieve Breastfeeding Success

The Challenge:
When Joann, a first-time mom, came to Little Eaters & Talkers, she was feeling overwhelmed and discouraged. Her newborn, Emma, was struggling to latch properly, leading to painful nursing sessions and a significant drop in milk transfer. Despite Joann’s determination, Emma’s weight gain was slower than expected, and the emotional toll was becoming difficult to manage. Joann wanted to continue breastfeeding but felt unsure about how to resolve these challenges.
Joann scheduled a lactation consultation with Little Eaters & Talkers to receive tailored support for her breastfeeding concerns. With expertise in both lactation and feeding therapy, I focused on identifying and addressing the underlying barriers while empowering Joann with practical strategies and emotional support.
Comprehensive Evaluation: During our initial session, I conducted a thorough assessment of Emma’s latch, suck, and swallow. I identified a shallow latch as a contributing factor to Joann’s discomfort and Emma’s inefficient milk transfer. Additionally, subtle tongue-tie restrictions were noted, which were affecting Emma’s ability to create an effective seal during nursing.
Hands-On Guidance: I demonstrated and guided Joann through latch adjustment techniques, focusing on achieving a deeper latch to alleviate pain and improve milk transfer. I also shared positioning options that offered Emma more stability and access to the breast.
Addressing Tongue-Tie: After reviewing the impact of Emma’s tongue-tie with Joann, we referred her to a pediatric dentist for an evaluation and frenotomy. Post-procedure, I supported Joann with strategies to help Emma relearn her latch and strengthen her oral motor skills.
Milk Supply Boosting: To ensure Emma’s nutritional needs were met during the adjustment period, I guided Joann on how to incorporate effective pumping sessions. We developed a manageable schedule and explored techniques to optimize milk supply.
Parental Support and Education: Throughout the process, I provided Joann with a safe space to express her concerns and celebrate her progress. We addressed myths and fears, equipping her with knowledge and confidence.
Within weeks, Joann and Emma experienced noticeable improvements. Emma began latching deeper, nursing sessions became comfortable, and her weight gain returned to a healthy trajectory. Joann’s confidence soared as she saw Emma thriving and found breastfeeding to be an enjoyable, bonding experience. Joann even commented,
“I finally feel like I’m doing what I’ve always wanted to do as a mom—feeding my baby and watching her grow.”
By addressing the root causes of their challenges and providing personalized, compassionate care, Joann and Emma’s breastfeeding journey transformed into a successful and fulfilling experience.

Babies who are feeding well typically have regular wet and dirty diapers, show steady weight gain, and seem content after feeding. If you’re unsure, a lactation consultant can help assess your baby’s feeding and offer reassurance or support.
Nipple pain can often be a sign of poor latch, positioning issues, or other concerns. A lactation consultant can evaluate your technique and recommend adjustments or treatments to make feeding more comfortable.
Frequent feeding, especially in the early weeks, is normal and helps establish milk supply. However, a lactation consultant can ensure your baby is feeding effectively and gaining weight appropriately.
Breast refusal can be caused by changes in routine, illness, or even frustration. A lactation consultant can help identify the root cause and guide you through strategies to reestablish comfortable breastfeeding.
